Poverty Proofing Culture
Online WebinarJoin us online to hear how you can support inclusive access to arts, museums and heritage.
Join us as we hear from Children’s North East, the team behind Poverty Proofing© which is a nationally recognised tool supporting organisations to remove barriers for those living in poverty.
This session is intended to inform people about the diverse experiences of people living in poverty and to generate informed discussion about ways in which we may unintentionally promote stigma or limit an individual’s access to participation and opportunities.
The Poverty Proofing© team have provided their services to some of the UK’s leading cultural organisations, including Sage Gateshead, BALTIC, Northern Stage and Head of Steam Museum as well as presenting at the Museums Association Conference 2023 and 2024. This will be their first delivery of training to the NI sector.
This training has been organised in partnership by Thrive and the NI Museums Council.
It is only available to those in the Northern Ireland museum, arts and heritage sector. As part of the booking process you will be asked how you meet this criteria.
Spaces are limited and are expected to book out quickly.
About the Training
The two main aims of this training are that staff have an understanding and an empathy for families suffering the effects of poverty, and that staff start to understand and unpick the impact poverty may have on the accessibility of their work through an exploration of:
- Why this work matters nationally and locally.
- Definitions of poverty.
- What the consequences of poverty are.
- The root causes of poverty.
- What lived experience of poverty looks like to audiences who engage, or do not engage, activities/workshops etc. at cultural venues and beyond.
- The development of Poverty Proofing Arts and Cultural organisations following development of this work in cultural settings.
- Exploration of staffs’ current role and identification of some of the barriers staff can identify within their work role.
