Dementia Friendly Museums

 

NIMC is working to become dementia friendly and the Development Officer (Learning) is a Dementia Friendly Communities Champion.

Memories, Movement & Museums 2 

This next phase of the dementia friendly musuems engagement work will further develop the practice with an intergenerational dimension to the project.  Mid Antrim Museum, NI War memorial and Armagh Robinson Library & No. 5 Vicars' Hill are all taking part.  The project builds on MMM 1 which weekly sessions combining collections-inspired activities with chair-based exercises (the Love to Move programme) along with training for local musuem staff to deliver intergeneational activities through training from Linking Generations NI and the Dementia Friendly communities team of the Alzheimer's Society NI.  The project will run from October 2021 to March 2022.

Project Overview

 

NIMC undertakes the following activities:

  • training Dementia Friends by delivering dementia awareness sesisons in local museums:  270 Dementia Friends trained through 27 sessions in 20 museums.  These workshops can now be offered online via Microsoft Teams.
  • providing bespoke training: reminiscence work to engage those living with dementia 
  • awarding Dementia Friendly grants: during 2019/20 grants supported activity at NI War Memorial, Armagh Robinson Library & No 5 Vicars' Hill, Mid-Antrim Museum , North Down Museum and Tower Museum.  612 participants living with dementia and their carers engaged with local musuems and collections through this grant support.
  • coordinating the NIMC Dementia Friendly working group: the next working group meetings is  6 July 2020 via Zoom.
  • building community partnerships: with Dementia NI and Alzheimer's Society NI
  • supporting local museums to develop Dementia Friendly Action Plans: Tower Museum, Armagh County Museum, North Down Museum, Mid Antrim Museum, Armagh Robinson Library & No 5 Vicars' Hill and Causeway Coast and Glens Museum Services are all registered as working to become dementia friendly.
  • Online engagement activity supported by NI Museums Council.  During 2020 and 2021 online projects to engage with those living with dementia and their carers have taken place: Love 2 Move Online May-June 2020, Memories, Movement & Museums October 2020-March 2021 and Museums & Storytelling April-May 2021.  Groups and individuals have been engaged both in care home  settings and in own homes.  This work was in response to the pandemic and the need to support vulnerable and socially  isolated individuals. Local museums who have  contributed: NI War Memoraial, Mid Antrim Museum, tower Museum, Ballymoney Museum and Armagh Robinson Library & No. 5 Vicars' Hill. The next phase is planned to start in autumn 2021.
