Dementia Friendly Museums

 

NIMC is working to become dementia friendly and the Development Officer (Learning) is a Dementia Friendly Communities Champion.

NIMC undertakes the following activities:

  • training Dementia Friends by delivering dementia awareness sesisons in local museums:  270 Dementia Friends trained through 27 sessions in 20 museums  
  • providing bespoke training: reminiscence work to engage those living with dementia 
  • awarding Dementia Friendly grants: during 2019/20 grants supported activity at NI War Memorial, Armagh Robinson Library & No 5 Vicars' Hill, Mid-Antrim Museum , North Down Museum and Tower Museum.  612 participants living with dementia and their carers engaged with local musuems and collections through this grant support.
  • coordinating the NIMC Dementia Friendly working group: the most recent working group meeting took place on 1 July 2020 via Microsoft Teams.
  • building community partnerships: with Dementia NI and Alzheimer's Society NI
  • supporting local museums to develop Dementia Friendly Action Plans: HMS Caroline, Tower Museum, Armagh County Museum, North Down Museum, Mid Antrim Museum, Armagh Robinson Library & No 5 Vicars' Hill and Causeway Coast and Glens Museum Services are all registered as working to become dementia friendly.
  • In response to the COVID-19 crisis NI Museums Council funded a pilot online programme to connect to those living with dementia using reminicence and chair based exercise delivered via Zoom.  Mid Antrim Museum, NI War Memorial and Tower Museum all took part in this pilot.  Karen Hutchinson, Love to Move Practicioner delivered the exercise elements of the pilot. Planning for phase 2 of the pilot is underway.
