The Museums, Money and Medals Network is an Arts Council funded project that exists to build and develop relationships between UK museums with coin, medal and banknote collections. Many local museums face a problem in this field in that there are very few specialist curators with in-depth knowledge working with these collections at the moment. This project seeks to address this by encouraging people to work together on a regional as well as national level to share knowledge and expertise.

The first aspect of this project is the collections mapping aspect and a questionnnaire is available for museums to return. Each participating institution then gets their own page on the Money and Medals website and it is the intention that this will become a national database for numismatic collections held within museums and institutions across the whole of Great Britain. The second aspect involves training. The training days involve introductory seminars on different aspects of the subject such as identification of coinage, storage of numismatics and display of these objects in new and innovative ways. The Network is open to museums of all types with collections of all sizes (from 25 commemorative medals to thousands of ancient coins) so it is as inclusive as possible and is intended to be of benefit to anyone with an interest in any aspect of numismatics.
